Cal arrived at his friend’s house with a tool bag. He had been invited for supper, but the porch light was loose and he had noticed a drip beneath the kitchen sink last time. It felt better to arrive with a reason someone might be glad to see him.
He was six weeks sober and staying in a room above his cousin’s garage. People had offered rides, meals, phone calls. He accepted each thing with a promise attached. He would fix something. Pay it back. Make himself useful before they regretted asking.
